Within hours of her nearly-nude Vanity Fair photo hitting the internet, 15 year old Miley Cyrus issued a statement saying she now “feels embarrassed” by the Annie Leibovitz-shot pic. Miley claimed the photo was intended to be “artistic,” but she now feels she let down her young fans.  

“My goal in my music and my acting is always to make people happy. For Vanity Fair, I was so honored and thrilled to work with Annie [Leibovitz]. I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed.”

In the as-yet-unreleased Vanity Fair photo shoot, Miley posed in a way that made her appear that she was only wearing a sheet. A friend told People Miley was fully clothed under, but Annie shot it in a way to make her look nude.

“The photo suggests that she is [naked], but she is not. She is covered by a sheet, and beneath the sheet she is clothed. Originally, she was in a flesh-colored tank top but was asked to remove it.”

The Disney Channel, who broadcasts Miley’s “Hannah Montana” TV show, also issued a comment on the matter.

“Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines.”

Although Miley’s parents are reportedly “mortified” by the photo, they spent most of the day on-set with Miley during the shoot. They left before the final shot, but her grandmother and teacher remained on-set the entire time.
