For a former anorexic, Kate Beckinsale comes off a bit insensitive-sounding when it comes to eating disorders. The actress recently claimed anorexia was a lot like becoming a “crack whore.” Um, ok.
Miss Beckinsale, whose weight once plummeted to five stones, said: “I believe anorexia, alcoholism and drug abuse in teens are more about what is happening in the home than a problem with images in the media.
“It is the nice girl’s way of becoming a crack whore.”
I honestly have no fucking clue what this broad is talking about. I think her weave might be pulled a bit too tight, because she’s talking like a crazy person.

Dammit, I have no way to defend things like that. It makes no sense. And I like her so I’d love to find a way to defend it. I just can’t.

Yeah, that was some dumb diction, but I agree that a lot anos and bulimiacs LOOK like crackwhores and are addicted to starving themselves. I think she thought a lot faster than she spoke is all.
Anyway, she’s a total babe. She could pick her nose and still look hot.

I get what she is saying even if it isn’t the best metaphor. She’s saying that girls who have a good reputation, come from good families, etc. are pressured into drugging and eating disorders while girls from broken homes etc., end up as “crack whores”.
I don’t think she intended to be offensive. But I don’t agree that these things are more problems at home most of the time. If that were true, why did she get so thin? Why are so many celebrities unhealthily slim? And why are they airbrushed to look unhumanly thin?

Nice girls won’t do crack. And they won’t be “whores,” because they’re too constrained by achieving society’s approval— and every “nice girl” knows that sleeping around or doing too many hard drugs is going to damage their reputation, and no one cares about “crack whores.”
Anorexia, however, is a disorder (as is addiction). That said, the early side effects to anorexia (and/or bulemia) are relatively institutionally awarded: thin girls can wear a wider variety of clothes, and trends, as well as shop at nearly any variety of stores when compared to their thick counterparts. Thinness is also socially awarded: when we (Americans) view thin people we recognize they must have self control, invest in their own wellbeing (thereby being healthy), and they fit the norm for what it is to be woman.
When a girl is thin, and wears nice clothes, and appears to be trendy, we celebrate them for their good looks. ((Problem being, for anyone with an ED reading this, the REAL side effects of anorexia and/or bulemia are COUNTER to these initial socially accepted side effects. They include things like rotting teeth, damaging the esophagus, loss of menses, psycho-social disturbances, etc etc etc.))
Celebrities bear the god awful burden of being watched at every step– and we ALL know the camera adds ten pounds. Imagine standing in line at the grocery store (or 7-11 or bookstore or whatever) and as you glance to your left you notice that you are on the FRONT PAGE of a magazine being criticized for your weight gain.
We feel like shit when a kid teases us in the halls at school or during a nasty breakup.
Imagine knowing that virtually everyone you encounter has had equal access to this story about you (complete with uber un-flattering pictures) including exes, rivalries, your mom, and the kids that teased you as a kid. Must blow.
The pressure on celebrities to be thin is ENORMOUS. They also happen to be in an industry that can hide and/or promote unhealthy thinness.
Poor Kate Beckinsale. She’s so misunderstood.

What do you mean insensitive? Why does one have to be sensitive to people who f their bodies up. too bad, get over it. they are losers anyway.

I get what she means although I don’t agree that they are mutually exclusive. I’m a recovering addict and one thing is the same as the other if you are an addict and eating disorders can be addictive disorders. Then there is just plain old need to get a job in size 0 people. Nicole Richie is not a 0, she is a minus 0, and that, in my opinion only, is an addict, however described. I would rather that Kate talk about how her fake breasts are about body dismorphic syndrome. hee hee

I agree, somewhat, with what Kate said. A lot of young women/girls don’t have very good home lives or may be having problems at school which made them end up having an eating disorder. However, that is not always the case. In fact, in most cases it’s not. I’m living proof of that. During my high school years (9th through 12th grade) I was bulemic and it wasn’t because my dad left when i was little or that my mom abused constantly or any other bad things. I had a fairly average home life, but i was heavily into gymnastics which ultimately became my downfall. I absolutely loved the sport, but I was too tall and too “big” to be a gymnast, but instead of my coach being honest and telling me this, he told me that I just needed to shed the pounds. I was 5′ 4″ tall, medium build, and I went down to a scrawny 97 lbs. I had dark circles under my eyes, sunken in cheeks and my hip bones and spine stuck out through my warm-up clothes. At times i was so weak that I couldn’t even do the routines and would fall or have to sit out and rest during practice because I was so tired. Luckily I had a teacher who cared enough to want to try to help me. It took a long time before I realized that she really meant well and cared about me and she helped me kick the bad habit and get healthy again by the middle of my senior year. Point being, not everyone who refuses to eat has mental issues. I don’t really believe that there is just a single category that they fit into. They do it for a variety of reasons……to lose weight, to fit in with a certain clique, sports, etc. Kate, I love you, but you’re wrong on this one.

well you see it sound like she knows from experience…. cuz you have to be a crack whore to know what being a crack whore would be like….
