Drew Barrymore will make her directorial debut this year with the comedy “Whip It!” The actress snagged “Juno” star Ellen Page to play the lead in the film about a beauty pageant contestant who enters the world of roller derby.

“I’ve been working toward the goal of directing my entire life,” Barrymore, 32, tells Variety. “Whip It! is a story that really spoke to me.”

“I really admire how Drew constantly challenges herself as an artist,” added Page, 20. “She’s proven herself as an actress and a producer, and I have no doubt she’ll bring great vision and creativity to the director’s chair. I can’t wait to kick ass on wheels!”

Filming will begin in Texas this summer.

Well, that sounds just like the type of movie I would avoid at all costs.

Actually, the book it’s based on is incredibly cute (”Derby Girl” by Shauna Cross, if anyone’s interested), and Ellen Page is perfect casting. I’m quite looking forward to this. :)
